Repressions against protests: August-December 2014

The report presents the systematic research of protests, repressions and concessions of protesters in Ukraine in August-December 2014 on protest activity and negative (repressive) reactions to the protests. The calculations below are available for the territory that was controlled by the Ukrainian government and do not include combat actions in the Donbass or any events in AR Crimea, Sevastopol and districts of Donetsk and Luhansk provinces that were controlled by the separatists. The number of negative reactions (repressions) to the protests in August-December 2014 was extremely high, not least due to the very high level of violence during the protests. Most repressive reactions were against anti-government protests and protests for federalization/separation from Ukraine, concentrated in the South-Eastern provinces. At the same time there were fewer repressions of equally violent electoral and anti-Communist protests. The strategy of repressions was more preventive and aimed at neutralizing dangerous protesters rather than precluding the protests in general. At the same time, high readiness for repressions against protesters and the selective nature of those repressions can be very dangerous due to the deterioration of the socio-economic situation in 2015, which will require systemic changes rather than repression of aggrieved citizens and patriotic pathos.
